Professor’s Notes
The Blurst is movement in a box — not “modulation for modulation’s sake,” but a controllable filter sweep that makes a riff feel alive. If you want your tone to pulse, sweep, and speak without changing how hard you pick, this is the weird, musical lever that does it.
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Blurst is a modulation filter that adds rhythmic, synth-leaning motion to guitar or bass using an internal LFO (so it doesn’t depend on your picking dynamics like a traditional envelope filter). Think “auto-wah energy,” but driven by tempo and shape — from slow, liquid sweeps to quick, percussive stutters that cut through a mix.
What it’s for (the one job): animated filter movement — a repeating sweep you can time to the song. Great for post-punk textures, funk-adjacent rhythm parts, and “make this section feel alive” moments where a normal chorus/phaser doesn’t do the trick.
PN’s quick start (a usable default in 30 seconds):
- Set the waveform to Triangle for the most musical, even sweep.
- Start with Rate around 10–11 o’clock, Range at noon, Resonance around 9–10 o’clock.
- If it’s too “quacky,” back off Resonance; if it’s not dramatic enough, push Range up.
Control options: Tap tempo gets you synced motion, and the expression input lets you take over the sweep by foot when you want the filter to “play” like an instrument.
