Description:

The natural wood case is in good condition with the exception of a single scuff mark on the bent side.  There are no other significant scratches, water marks, nor is the veneer lifting. There is a gritty feel to the finish in some areas particularly on the lid and at the curve of the bent side.  There is no evidence of mold on the support beams or trapwork. The pedal lyre is well attached and stable when the pedal is used.

The key frame is sound. The keys are in good condition. The key bushings exhibit no excessive play. The keytops are plastic and without cracks or chips.  

In the top action, the wippens and hammers are in excellent condition.  The hammers are only faintly grooved.  The back checks and knuckles show little wear and are without deformity.  

The back action is in equally good condition.  All felt components are in excellent condition; there is no evidence of mouse or insect damage.  

The soundboard is in excellent condition and remains crowned. There are no significant cracks or compression ridges.   The ribs are well affixed to the soundboard. The tuning pins are appropriately tight and hold the strings at pitch. The plate is intact. The bridges have only fine cracks at the pins; the bridge pins are tight. The strings have appropriate downbearing across the bridges.  The strings are free of corrosion.  

In sum, this 1986 Steinway D is in excellent condition and appears to have been very gently used.   Due to disuse, the piano would benefit from not only a tuning but also having the top and back action regulated.
