Originally conceived as a compact reimagining of the now-discontinued Gray Channel®, Gary evolved into something far more daring: a dual-circuit pedal featuring a pulse-width modulated fuzz on one side and a natural-sounding op-amp overdrive on the other. Whether you’re after raw, destructive fuzz or dynamic, amp-pushing drive, Gary has you covered.

The Story Behind Gary

The idea for Gary began with a simple request from Lee Kiernan, who wanted a smaller version of his favourite discontinued Gray Channel® overdrive. But EarthQuaker Devices decided to dig deeper, exploring “Gary after dark” – and what emerged was a fuzz monster unlike anything before it.

The right brain of Gary delivers a dynamic, destructive pulse-width modulated fuzz. This circuit transforms your signal into a square wave, allowing you to shape the duty cycle with your playing dynamics. Turn the Yes! control down for thick, sustaining fuzz, or push it higher for an aggressive, cutting, almost broken sound that sputters and vanishes with your pick attack – like an amp gasping for life through a phase shifter.

The left brain reveals Gary’s more controlled side: a rich, organic op-amp overdrive based on the beloved Green Channel. This side delivers a smooth, transparent drive that can serve as a clean boost or a powerful, full-bodied distortion. Use Go and That’s It to dial in everything from subtle warmth to roaring grit – the perfect complement to the chaos of the fuzz channel.
