Gibson LG-1 (early-1950s) – Sunburst Small-Body Flattop, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Ladder-braced spruce/mahogany, 14¼″ concert body with classic early-’50s Gibson vibe
Some guitars wear their years with grace—and this LG-1 carries them in its bones. What began life as a fairly humble instrument in Gibson's 1950s lineup has, over decades of devoted play, aged into one of the most soulful and responsive guitars we've ever had the privilege to offer. Its voice is dry and mid-forward, with that woody, immediate “front-of-the-note” attack players crave for blues, folk, and old-time styles. It’s a guitar that’s been somewhere—and it sounds like it.
🎧 We’ve included a YouTube clip in the listing so you can hear this guitar’s beautifully aged tone for yourself.
The ladder-braced spruce top delivers punch and focus without the boom of a dreadnought, making it ideal for fingerstyle or vocal accompaniment. Its small teardrop tort guard, rectangular rosewood bridge with pearl bolt caps, and 3-on-a-plate tuners remain period-correct, while the gold script logo on the headstock anchors it firmly in the post-war Gibson aesthetic. A “Y” factory-order prefix confirms early-1950s origin from Kalamazoo.
Condition
Honest vintage condition with decades of nitro checking and scattered edge wear/dings consistent with a loved instrument. Top shows fine “alligator” checking; binding has aged to a deep cream. No obvious structural cracks observed in our visual inspection; truss rod turns, tuners function, and it plays through the board. As with any 70-year-old acoustic, plan on your preferred setup and routine vintage maintenance.
Neck & Top Notes
The neck is in excellent condition, with great frets and a comfortable setup that plays effortlessly. There is mild bellying on the top, which is typical for older ladder-braced guitars. Importantly, it appears fully settled and stable after decades of drying and aging, with no structural concern and no neck reset needed at this time. We recommend sticking with standard light gauge strings (12s) to keep the top under optimal tension, and avoiding medium/heavy sets (13s or higher) which can increase tension and potentially exaggerate bellying over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it a J-45?
A: No—the J-45 is a slope-shoulder dreadnought (~16″). This is the smaller LG-series (~14¼″) concert body.
Q: Ladder- or X-braced?
A: Ladder-braced spruce top (correct for LG-1 in this era). That’s why it delivers a tighter, more mid-focused projection versus the airier X-braced LG-2/J-45 voice.
Q: Any cracks or repairs?
A: We don’t see obvious structural cracks in the photos; finish checking is extensive. As with all vintage acoustics, buyer should expect normal setup/maintenance and evaluate to taste.
Q: Are the parts original?
A: Pickguard, bridge style (rectangular with pearl bolts), and strip tuners present as period-correct; originality of small parts (pins/screws/saddle) not guaranteed—please review the detailed photos.
