Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a classic older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice in the 1950's. This is the earlier 2nd generation 630 that has the polished chrome housing and looks very good despite the typical wear but make no mistake it functions perfectly with a strong 100% signal and set at high impedance. It comes with the period cable in which to operate as well as the very rare baffle that E.V sold as a separate accessory at that time.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old E.V catalog I have showing the mics basic characteristics.
Pic # 3 shows Jerry Lee Lewis using one of these very mics. Probably used an E.V 630 singing Great balls of Fire at some point in his career.
Pic 4 4 shows the E.V baffle and it's basic characteristics. It was used to decrease the chance of unwanted pops while using the 630 model mic.
The baffle is an all metal design that slips onto the mic via tension. It adds a whole new vibe to the mic and these are quite collectible. I've only ever come across 3 of these in the past 15 years. Like the mic it too shows wear in the form of heavier scratches and scuff marks but the front screen is free of any dents or odors. This accessory alone is an easy $100.00 item.
The 630 mic was typically used for dispatch and broadcasting purposes but was even used for singing for live events. These happen to make excellent harp mics today however due to it's dirtier higher pitched tone being void of bass. You get a dirty, gritty sound that a lot of musicians and harp players like. Very old school and "rockabilly". It's an omni-directional mic as well.
The mic housing / head is reminiscent of the jet engines being used by several American and Soviet fighter planes of the 1940's and 50's. The look was very popular but by the 1960's the look was dated and just not as popular as the earlier models were.
The 70 + year old microphone has typical wear as you can see in pictures mostly in the form of a few heavier scuff marks, spots of pitting and tiny scratches. The threads for the cable and stand are perfect with zero stripping. The E.V label looks pretty good though tarnished and completely legible. Overall this piece is an easy 6 + on a scale of 1 - 10. Again, it works like new and will do you justice.
The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension. The on / off switch works great as well.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
The mic comes with a shorter cable that is appx 9 feet in length and has the male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. No exterior stains.
