Gibson / 1958 J-45

The factory order number (FON) indicates this particular guitar was made in 1958.
The "J-45 ADJ BRIDGE" inscription can be seen on the crack guard on the back of the body.

The adjustable bridge was available as an option starting in 1956.
When it first appeared, it had a unique style with large dial knobs for adjusting string height on both sides of the bridge (used on the J160E).
However, it soon transitioned to an aluminum-based adjustable bridge.
Then, in the late 1950s, its image changed drastically, with a change to a combination of pure white ceramic saddles and large screws.

1958 was the year when adjustable saddles surpassed straight saddle saddles for the first time, marking a period when standards for the J-45 were changing.
The mechanism that allowed for easy string height adjustment without having to grind down the saddles was revolutionary even at the time.
As with the invention of the adjustable truss rod, Gibson continues to create historic treasures like this.
Not only was it adjustable, but it also had a major impact on sound, and it is quite moving to consider that it was connected to the sound of songs by Donovan and Takuro Yoshida.

This particular guitar uses replacement parts, so it has a 1960s specification.

Another distinctive feature of this guitar is its finish. The sunburst finish on the body top has faded and aged to resemble honey sunburst. This is a characteristic finish seen around 1960.

This doesn't match the FON designation, but the key here is the "2" stamped on the back of the headstock. This indicates a second-hand product and is stamped if there are any cosmetic defects.

Another noteworthy point here is the neck shape.
Around 1958, guitars would have a thicker neck, but this particular guitar has a relatively thin neck.
For reference, see below.

Another example from 1958
Neck thickness near the 1st and 2nd frets: 23.3mm
Neck thickness near the 4th and 5th frets: 24.5mm

Another example from 1960
Neck thickness near the 1st and 2nd frets: 20.0mm
Neck thickness near the 4th and 5th frets: 21.0mm

This example
Neck thickness near the 1st and 2nd frets: 20.6mm
Neck thickness near the 4th and 5th frets: 20.9mm

Based on these findings, it's likely that this guitar was manufactured in 1958, but that it experienced some kind of trouble and had the neck and finish re-set around 1960.
However, there's still some reddish tinge remaining on the back of the body, which is a characteristic of the cherry sunburst finish introduced in 1961, so it's quite puzzling.
This guitar offers many possibilities for speculation, making it a very interesting instrument.

There's nothing wrong with using it as a vintage guitar.

In fact, I think it's an advantage to be able to enjoy it with this story.
