A solid restoration project for the right enthusiast!
This is the Tascam 38, a legendary 1/2" 8-track reel-to-reel recorder—highly sought after for its warm analog character and pro-level design. If you're into tape restoration, this is a prime candidate with plenty of life left in it.
Condition Overview
Unit powers on and lights up as shown
All 8 VU meters light up
6 of 8 VU meters respond to signal (2 are currently unresponsive—specific channels unknown)
One pinch roller is missing; the other engages when powered
Belt needs replacing (not functioning internally)
The TASCAM logo head cover (usually covering the play/record heads) is missing, exposing the heads
A few panel screws and button caps missing
Cosmetically
Front panel is generally intact but shows wear (scratches, scuffs); knobs and meters mostly complete
Rear panel: All main ports appear intact; fuse cap is present; minor rust/discoloration on some screws and the metal case edges
Sold AS-IS for restoration or parts—not fully tested
These decks are becoming harder to find, especially in repairable condition with most components present. With some parts and know-how, this could be a rewarding project or parts donor.
