Here is a Bacon Style C tenor banjo, serial number dates it to 1924. Made in Groton, Conn., this ol’ gal has seen some things in her 100+ years! It doesn’t get any better than a Bacon tenor banjo!
It is equipped with a newish Elite synthetic head, and comes with the original steel hoop, if you’d like to switch back to a skin head in the future. The original friction tuners have been recently oiled and tightened and are holding strong. It is currently set up for Irish trad playing and tuning (GDAE), with John Pierce Irish Tenor strings, but I’ll include a pack of standard tenor banjo strings too, if you prefer standard tuning (CGDA).
At some point in its life, it was given a fifth string. That was removed and repaired before I got the banjo, but it’s a great repair job, hardly noticeable honestly, and doesn’t affect playing at all.
Now this is the part that I cannot stress enough: the tone is incredible! It is crystal clear, not muddy at all, loud, but not brash. It is just such a great sound! It plays well, sounds well, and is such a cool piece of American music history, with lots of life left in it!
Comes with an old case, not original, but not far off. One of the latches has some tearing around it, but they all still clasp and hold well.
