For sale we have a superb 1970 Martin D-41 in Natural finish with original hardshell case. Made in Nazareth, PA, USA. The D-41 model was originally released in 1969 as a luxurious dreadnought featuring top-of-line ornamentation and the highly prized “Golden Era” forward-shifted scalloped X bracing but integrated with modern features. The D-41 is a powerful full sized dreadnought with clear note articulation, responsive attack, strong booming low end and sparkling highs. Constructed from beautiful solid tone woods and expert craftsmanship, this D-41 is an incredible value in today’s market. This particular example is in very good overall condition showing moderate wear throughout. The body shows lots of superficial scuffs, scratches, dings and dents scattered throughout, honest wear from an instrument that has been played and loved for decades. The top shows strum wear above the soundhole and below on the pickguard as well as a network of heavy lacquer checking from exposure to temperature changes over the years (see photo). The backside of the body shows light buckle rash, not centrally located to any particular area but more so spread somewhat uniformly across the entire surface, no major hot spot. There was a hole drilled into the lower bout for a previously installed pickup’s output jack but the hole has since been professionally repaired (see photo). The neck shows a fair bit of honest play wear as well with some lacquer worn down on the backside in the first position as well as a handful of dings and dents scattered throughout. There are two or three larger dings near the headstock joint that really can’t be felt while playing, mostly just cosmetic but they are there. The guitar is structurally sound with no cracks or breaks and all of the bracing is firmly seated. The guitar features a 24.5”, solid Sitka Spruce top with white binding and Abalone purfling, beautifully and tightly grained Indian Rosewood back and sides, wooden marquetry backstrip, black pickguard, 4” soundhole with Style 45 rosette, Ebony belly-down bridge with white bridge pins. The solid Mahogany neck joins the headstock with a diamond joint or “valute” and features a Modified Oval profile measuring .830” deep at the first fret and .970” deep at the ninth fret. Width at the nut measures 1 11/16”. The beautifully rich and dark bound Ebony fingerboard features a 12” radius, Abalone inlaid hexagonal fret markers and 20 medium jumbo frets. The frets show minimal play wear and have lots of life left in them. The neck is straight and plays great, notes ring clean and clear up and down the fingerboard with no dead spots. The action is set-up medium/low with good height left in the saddle. The bound headstock sports an Indian Rosewood faceplate, pearl inlaid CMF Martin logo and gold plated Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. The guitar weighs in at 4 lbs. 14.5 oz. It will be properly packed with care prior to shipment. In-store trades only. Please reach out with any further questions. Thanks!
