This is for a single pickup cover. I have two of these and two matching pickup rings. Check my other listings!
Authentic Gibson new-old-stock chrome pickup cover circa 1976-1979.
Never used, never installed. Clean mirror-like chrome surface!
Screws not included.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Not all thunderbird pickups are the same size!
Measure your bass before buying!!
Length: 3-5/8" / 92 mm
Width: 1-9/16" / 40 mm
Height: 3/4" / 19mm
These 1976-1979 "Bicentennial" thunderbird pickup covers have exactly the same length and width as 1960s thunderbird pickups, but they are about 1/4" taller than the 1960s pickups!
You can tell a 1976-1979 thunderbird pickup apart from a 1960s one in two ways:
- There are three mounting screw holes instead of two.
- It's about 1/4" taller!
"Modern" (since 1987) black plastic Gibson pickups are similar height to the 1976-1979, but are slightly wider and longer (about 94mm x 42mm x 20mm).
So:
- This cover will fit in a 1976-1979 Thunderbird.
- It will fit any Gibson bass post-1987 with black plastic thunderbird-style pickups, with about a 1 mm gap around the pickup. New screw holes needed.
- It should fit (with a 1mm gap) anything that has EMG thunderbird replacement pickups, which are sized like modern Gibson black ones. New screw holes needed.
- It should perfectly fit anything that currently has Bartolini thunderbird replacements, as those seem to be exactly the same size as 76-79 spec. But, new screw holes needed!
- It may be too tall for vintage 1960s spec routing, eg the current "non-reverse" thunderbirds with chrome pickups, or vintage-style clones such as Greco et al. These may need the pickup cavity routed deeper!
- I do not know about any of the Epiphone thunderbird models!
History: I purchased these on ebay circa 2007 for an abandoned project. There is no documentation but these were claimed to be sold by an ex Gibson employee, and the consensus among gibson aficionados on a now-defunct bass forum ("The Dudepit") was that these are genuine.
