This specific guitar is amazing in that IMHO it out performs the HD-28. The D-40 uses a newer Larrivee "Scalloped" bracing system utilizing Alpine moon spruce braces, which provides more volume and a deeper, bass-forward.

The trebles are sweet and bright.

Playability is great with a pick. So much fun to play. Lots of headroom, yet very responsive to light strumming. The guitar is very light weight - which makes it to me very enjoyable to play.

The craftmanship is boutique shop perfection. Even the bracing is nicely sanded. Everything fits together perfectly.

The tone woods are primo. The Alpine Spruce top is clearly Master grade - the top matches the best Alpine spruce out there on guitars costing 10-20,000 dollars. The top not only appears to be AAAA, but as you would expect from Alpine Spruce (moon spruce harvested), the top is alive and responsive making beautiful and nuanced music.

The rosewood is a dark chocolate color and tight grained.

I understand this guitar does not have a Froggy Bottom, Collings or Huss & Dalton pedigree, but heck if it's playability and tone you are after - this D40 Alpine Spruce will ...

This Alpine Spruce (harvested in such a way to be called moon spruce) is high-quality European Alpine spruce (Picea abies)

** harvested in winter during a waning moon when sap content is lowest, leading to increased stability, density, and resonance, offering a fast response, complex overtones, and a balanced tonal spectrum.

** Alpine Moon Spruce is harvested in a small 100 sq mi area of Alps - same area utilized for Stratovarius violins

Properties: Highly prized for its superior stiffness-to-weight ratio, which enhances responsiveness and produces a "warm" or "complex" sound often compared to aged wood.

Have you ever heard of keep it simple! Larrivee did so with the Legacy series.

The Larrivee D40 is a great alternative to the Martin HD-28 - without the high price tag.

Alpine spruce is special - Alpine Moon Spruce is special times two

Alpine Moon Spruce soundboard guitars are typically in the $10k - $30,000 price range - Boutique shops and Santa Cruz or McPherson guitars

How does Larrivee do it, I don't know. But we do know from experience sooner or later they will go the way of the dinosaur. The Larrivee stash will eventually be exhausted.

Moon spruce will never be a high volume feature.

To summarize this limited edition guitar I would say "if this had been the first guitar I'd ever bought, this could have easily been the 'last' guitar I'd ever bought - that's how good it is.

I give you my honest opinion of this guitar. The Alpine moon spruce is a very substantial upgrade.

Santa Cruz & boutique shops are charging BIG for Alpine Moon Spruce upgrade.

THIS SPECIFIC D-40 LEGACY Alpine Moon Spruce has a strong and beautiful voice, you will not be disappointed.

D-40R Aged Aline Moon Spruce: This LIMITED EDITION uses an Alpine moon spruce top that has been aged for a minimum of 10 years, which offers similar benefits to torrefied wood, such as greater responsiveness. 

Simplicity in looks and beyond amazing in sound. (check my feedback, I give honest reviews)

• Rosewood is a most desirable dark chocolate color, great tonality (see inside sound hole)

Larrivee's attention to detail was brilliant, bone nut/saddle. Maple binding, rich, dark rosewood. Neck and play ability to me Perfect IMHO

Neck mahogany is rich and satisfying to look at.

THE TOP --- Only Larrivee has these AFORDABLE Alpine AlpMoon Spruce tops.

I just HAD to try one and I am floored. Read about them on the internet. I can tell you they are awesome!!!

This top feature wider grain at the edges and tight grain in the middle - this creates a more open sound and allows enhanced movement of the sound board - a good thing :)

This one HAS THE MOJO!! on the cheap.
