Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting...
One of my personal guitars. I have played this 1965 Gibson J50 for many years now and its time to share.
Be sure to check out the awesome video demo we did for this incredible guitar!
Here's the story on this awesome guitar..
I found this guitar in a guitar shop here in Des Moines. It was in the shop window and had a smashed top on it. It looked like it had been kept in a barn for decades. I asked to buy it and was told it was not for sale. Every time I went to the shop, I asked to buy it telling the shop owner I promised to fix it properly. Finally, I got it. I took it to my luthier and had him purchase a torrefied AAA Spruce top blank. He fitted it into the guitar, replaced a couple of braces that were broke and put the replaced vintage correct adjustable bridge on it. The top was finished in a very light nitrocellulose finish that has aged and finish checked like it was the original. See pics 10-13... The neck angle after all these years was still right on. No neck reset was needed. The back and sides were in fine shape and the frets are in equally great shape. I added the non-original pickguard later.
One day after playing at our Church Service I came off the platform and noticed that the top had cracked. One of the braces had come loose and took the top with it. The luthier offered to replace the top, but I asked him instead to fix the brace and crack. I loved the thin top and finish so much with the finish crazing, I didn't want to chance it not turning out as well. The repair was great. See pic 22. We filled the strap button screw hole in the neck heel. See pic 13.
The guitar plays and sounds wonderful. The nut measures 1 5/8 inches and the neck profile is super comfortable C. Thinner than the later J50 guitars. Perfect for my hands. Super low action that's a pleasure to play. The guitar has the standard 24 1/2 inch scale neck. The adjustable bridge still has some adjustment in it should the action ever need to be lowered some. The Truss Rod works as it should.
It has the original nut, truss rod cover and Kluson Single Line Tuners on it. The body bindings are turned a beautiful amber and are nice and tight to the body. My Luthier did a great job with the bindings on the top!
Some player dings and scratches that I admit to. It was played for many years now. All player wear. See pics of the dings and finish crazing in pics 18-21.
We didn't get the original case with the guitar. The case would have been a soft shell case that I would not want to ship this beauty in. I have the shown almost new Hard Shell Case that I will send the guitar in. It is a great case that protects the guitar as it should.
Beautiful but vintage, used and old so it is sold as is no returns. Thanks for respecting that!
