You can’t turn back time… but you can hear it. That’s the most striking thing to say about this guitar.
In the 1950s, when American television was still in black and white, Gibson wanted to bring a fresh look for the Les Paul Junior on stage. But traditional sunburst or dark finishes looked terrible on TV—blacks were too dark, bright colors were glowing. That’s when the now-iconic “TV Yellow” was born.
What is TV Yellow and Why “TV”?
The name “TV Yellow” has often been described as a way to make guitars look better on television. But the real story goes deeper:
- The finish actually started out as limed mahogany, a technique that highlighted the grain while giving the wood a natural yet distinctive look.
- Gibson referred to this special yellowish shade as the “TV Finish”, designed to look more natural and lively under TV lights.
- The Les Paul TV Model was in fact a special variant of the Junior—single P-90 pickup, solid mahogany body, simple yet powerful tone. But it was never marketed as a “Junior.” In the catalogs of the era, right after the Junior page, you’d find the TV Model, positioned at a higher price point.
1957 was the year Gibson introduced the legendary PAF humbuckers on standard Les Paul models. Yet, the TV Model remained equipped with the P-90 single coil, giving it a rawer, more aggressive and characterful tone. From punk to blues, rockabilly to indie, it found its place across countless styles.
Today, original 1957 Gibson Les Paul TV Models are considered extremely rare and highly collectible. They represent not only guitar design history but also a unique intersection of American television culture, design, and rock ‘n’ roll heritage.
With its TV Yellow finish, dog-ear P-90 pickup, and one-piece mahogany body, this guitar embodies the authentic tone and spirit of the 1950s. 100% original parts, naturally aged finish, and an unmistakable vintage character. We’re talking about nearly 70 years of history here.
It comes with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, original wraparound bridge, and sturdy hard case. No modifications – a true collector’s piece.
This guitar is not just an instrument; it is a living legacy of a defining era in rock history. The TV Model has become a hidden gem across genres, from punk to blues, garage rock to indie.
