1976 Mansfield Deluxe 59er, built at Fujigen Gakki during the same period they were producing the Ibanez 2340 and 2350 Les Paul models. Mansfield was a Canadian market badge, but the construction, routing, hardware and electronics are all consistent with mid 1970s Fujigen work. The serial number is B760359, which places it in early 1976.

The body is solid mahogany with a maple cap and a flame maple veneer, and the neck is the classic three piece maple bolt on design that Fujigen used before they moved more heavily into set neck builds. Rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays, binding with black side dots and the open book headstock shape you would expect from a lawsuit era copy. Hardware is original, including the tuners and the ST BRIDGE Made in Japan stop tailpiece, which is the exact tailpiece found on Fujigen built Ibanez and Antoria Les Paul copies from this era.

Many players assume that the bolt on lawsuit era Japanese Les Paul copies from the 1970s were the lighter chambered or hollowed out or even plywood bodied versions that came out of other factories. That was true for some of the Matsumoku and Terada built 59er variations, but not for the Fujigen line. This particular 1976 Mansfield is the solid body Fujigen design, meaning a solid mahogany body with a carved maple cap and a flame maple veneer on top. The control cavity, pickup routes, weight and internal wood structure match the solid body Ibanez 2340 and 2350 series Les Pauls from the same period. It is not one of the hollow or semi hollow types that get lumped into the idea that all bolt on LP copies were cheap. This is the heavier and more substantial Fujigen version.

The guitar currently has a matched pair of Maxon Super 70 humbuckers. Both have the early hand scribed Super 70 markings and the correct five digit Maxon serial numbers from 1976. The wiring style, braided leads and solder work are all from the right period. Inside the cavity, everything lines up with mid 1970s Fujigen. The four full size Japanese 500k pots are the original Fujigen types, with two stamped 504042 and the other two stamped 504072. Fujigen commonly mixed these within the same harness during this period. The tone circuit still uses the original green 0.022 uF mylar chicklet caps, and the pickup leads are the correct braided shield wire. The cavity routing, overspray and layout match what you see in Ibanez and Antoria Les Paul guitars from the same years. Nothing in the harness looks replaced.

Condition is VG by vintage MIJ standards. There are small marks and edge wear on the back and around the rim, but nothing outside what you would expect from a guitar that is nearly fifty years old. The frets were recently leveled, crowned and polished and play cleanly. Electronics work properly with no scratchy pots or intermittent issues. The guitar has just had a full setup and plays comfortably with good intonation. The original hard case is included.

For collectors of early Fujigen Les Paul copies, this Mansfield is essentially the same instrument as the Ibanez models of the period, just with a rarer badge and a correct set of 1976 Maxon Super 70 pickups already in place. It is a solid example of Fujigen production from the mid 1970s with all the right parts and character. Loaded with pics so you know exactly what you’re getting!
