Fender / 1950s Champion Lap Steel
We've just received a lap steel guitar, a representative example of Fender from the 1950s.
The Champion was originally sold as a student model, but its excellent sound has earned it widespread support from professional musicians today.
This particular guitar is from the early 1950s.
The vibrant yellow pearl finish with a subtle amber hue enhances its vintage look.
The serial number is in the 3000s.
We believe this guitar dates to around 1952.
The head plate and nut are one piece, and it is engraved with "Fender Electric Instrument Co. Fullerton, California." It's very cool.
The screws on the plate are Phillips-head screws.
The Phillips-head screws replaced the flathead screws around the latter half of 1952.
The screws on the control plate, however, still use flathead screws, but these have been replaced.
The tuners have been replaced with Kluson-type triple tuning machines from an unknown manufacturer. You can see traces of the original Kluson pickups on the back of the headstock.
The pickups are original.
The powerful, crisp sound is impressive.
The tone pot has been replaced with a CTS dated '83.
The Volt pot has also been replaced, so the date is unreadable, but it is thought to be from the same year.
The capacitor has been replaced with a Sprague Bumble Bee.
The original alligator case is included.
The case shows considerable age, with broken metal fittings and tears in the case.
This is one of the finest vintage items, with its design, looks, and hardware. Just looking at it will get you excited.
