United Unbranded Parlor Guitar - circa 1960’s

Unbranded vintage ¾ guitar made by United in New Jersey circa 1960’s

       Excellent condition laminate guitar made in the old Oscar Schmidt factory in Jersey City, NJ, some time in the 1960’s. These were very inexpensively made beginner guitars with distinctive features. Similar to other mass producers of budget guitars, United made an identically constructed basic guitar which was marketed with different paint jobs under dozens of different brands. Like nearly all United guitars, this one has Kluson open gear plank tuners and a tailpiece riveted rather than screwed to the guitar. I don’t think the white nut is original because most United guitars have synthetic nuts in the color range of yellow to orange. However, the nut has the dimensions of a United nut, and someone before me did a good job filing down the string grooves to improve the action. The uneven but functional treble side end of the nut has been shored up with epoxy. The original floating bridge was cracked in a couple places so I glued, sanded and re-stained the wood and it works fine. Probably not even noticeable. The bridge is tall enough to shave the bottom if you want to lower the strings a little, but the action is good and it plays well up the neck without buzzing or fretting out. This guitar has a slightly thicker, sturdier laminate top than do some United parlors; the top woods seem to have varied some, from year to year I suspect. Stencil white dot fret markers at 3, 5, 7, 9 & 12. Cosmetically there are lots of dings & scratches, the worst being where someone scratched their name or something on the top bass side near the sound hole. It’s part of the guitar’s charm!
