Fender Japan ST57 LH Stratocaster

As its name suggests, the LH indicates a Left-Handed Stratocaster. It features a U serial number with a "Made in Japan" decal which points to being manufactured by Dyna Musical Instruments between 2010 and 2012. While maintaining its consistent quality and excellent value for money, it offers modern playability that's adaptable to a variety of styles.

The ST57 is a modern reproduction of a 1957 Stratocaster and features a basswood body, maple neck, and 21-fret maple fingerboard. In the neck pocket, we find an ink stamped "ST57" with no other model information. Three single coil pickups with plain bobbins are controlled via a simple 1 VOL/2 TONE and 5-way selector configuration, with the bridge having no dedicated tone control. Other features include a white single-ply pickguard, and a headstock logo that doesn't feature the "Stratocaster" designation which is quite unusual.

The color is also interesting. The warranty uses the model designation "ST57/LH OCR" with OCR being Old Candy Apple Red, a color exclusive to Fender Japan. OCR is a metallic red, achieved by spraying a silver undercoat and then applying a dark red topcoat. While the sides of this guitar are a color that is very close to OCR, in this case we have a burst. Yet, it is different from a typical Sunburst or Cherry Burst, having no black on the sides and being a darker red than a typical Cherry Burst. Additionally, the exposed wood under the clear coat shows small knots, growth patterns and mismatched wood grain - something you don't see with bursts as guitars with "imperfections" such as this are usually relegated to solid body color status. Our theory – and this is only a theory – is that this guitar was scheduled to be finished in OCR but whoever was working in the paint booth forgot the silver undercoat as he or she sprayed the sides. Quickly realizing their mistake they had no choice but to turn this guitar into a unique sunburst. Of course we could be wrong but it's interesting to think about!

The guitar appears to be all original and functions as it should. Cosmetically there are minor scratches, a couple of dents here and there and some very minor corrosion to the parts but the guitar is in great shape overall and doesn't appear to have been played very often over the years.

As with all of our instruments, we have given it a thorough clean, polish and set up for optimal playability.
