The Lion Special was designed for players who want a Lion guitar, but with a little different sound than a standard T-style. The Lion Special offers a pair of Lollar P-90s or Imperial humbuckers, and a Gotoh hardtail or Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge—all wrapped in your choice of classic nitro finishes.

What Does Cam Think

Shabat consistently impresses me with every guitar they send us. This Lion Special is no exception. We’ve had quite a few Lion Specials come through the shop. They are all killer but all a little different. Serial #444 is as rock solid as they come. Specs include a mahogany body, roasted flame maple neck and fretboard, Dunlop 6105 frets, and a great set of PAF-inspired Lollar Imperial humbuckers.

A mahogany bodied humbucker equipped guitar is always a great place to start. Add a maple neck, and you have a strong combination of deep lows, strong mids, and a nice top end to keep your notes clear. The Lollar Imperials thrive in a balanced tonal starting point, like this Lion. The bridge Imperial has a nice honk and bite to its attack but also has enough fatness to keep your single notes big.

The neck Imperial has an ultra-smooth tonality that makes your playing sound refined, for lack of a better word. And in the in-between position, both pickups together have this funky brightness that makes you want to groove. Add in some gain and you are off to races with sustaining leads and harmonically rich riffs. This Lion can purr and roar at the drop of a hat.

Another key component in this build is the Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge. It keeps the guitar feeling nimble while ensuring plenty of resonance transfer to the body. It features six individually-adjustable saddles for perfect intonation. It feels very nice under the hand when resting the palm. No sharp edges or bulky contours.

How Does It Play

The neck is a full but comfortable Chunky ’59 profile, measuring about 0.88” at the first fret and 0.98” at the 12th. It’s a great neck carve for sure. The string action measures 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and 4/64” at the 12th fret on the high E.
