This is a Martin D35 Brazilian acoustic, which was born as a 12 string but was later converted to a 6 string, 12 fret, slot head. Why was that? That’s an interesting story.

I acquired this piece approximately 10 years ago, from the Rockin Robins guitar shop in Houston, Texas, a very well known institution. I loved the look of the piece and it played wonderfully. I later inquired about it from Bart, the owner, who advised me that the guitar was originally a Brazilian, Martin D 35-12 string from the late 1960s that was damaged. He reportedly sent the guitar to the Martin factory for repairs and restoration, which resulted in a 12 fret, slot head, D 35 6 string, with a new neck and top. It’s odd looking, a full dread body and a shorter, 12 fret, slot head neck. I had similar set up in a Tippin acoustic guitar. The oddness ends when you play it.

How does this play and sound? That’s an easy one, wonderful. The set up is very comfortable to play finger style. With 55 year old, Brazilian back and sides, it’s sweet and responsive. The more you play, the better it sounds.

Now for the particulars. The serial numbers identify the approximate manufacturing time was between 1968 and 1969. The Martin D-35 Brazilian, 3 piece back, 6 strings from this era are uncommon and the 12 strings are even rarer. This piece has Waverley turners, a truss rod, 25 inch scale length, and the lower bout width is approximately 15 1/4 inches. The back sides top and size are an excellent shape. There’s a few scratch marks on the pick guard. There is no pickup and the action is awesome.

I am not interested in trades. Please no low ball offers. No returns. No international shipping. We can discuss shipping to Alaska and Hawaii. Local pickup in the Houston area can be arranged.

Shipping now is very expensive. Reverb doesn’t offer special shipping rates or insurance in this price range. I do recommend FedEx overnight air & I will split the cost with the buyer, which is ~$450 to the buyer. I have done this with other high end guitars.

thanks for looking.
