Vintage Marantz 2238B Streaming Player

 Built like a tank, this vintage one-of-a-kind Marantz 2238 Streaming Player was originally produced in 1972 is a high-quality stereophonic AM/FM receiver featuring pure analog signal processing preamp and old school 38WPC analog amplifier with 4 large size full metal jacket power transistors. The built in streaming device is new as is its dedicated power supply.

 The unit has been fully tested for functionality.   Audiophile streaming via Bluetooth brings this Marantz to a whole new level.  The sound is amazing!  Control the volume from your phone. Plenty of power from this dynamic sounding amplifier. 

Condition:

 This Marantz is in very good condition for it's age with some minor scratches on the faceplate and a scratch on the balance knob. The feet are original.   The streaming player is new as is its dedicated power supply.  Photos are part of product description. See close-up photos for details.

Full Disclosure of what is you are purchasing:

The internal electronics circuit is in original condition with few exceptions.  I added a new polarized plug to the 2238B which makes the unit safer for the owner to operate.  The FM demodulator appears to be fully functional as all the components on the board checked out. The FM Stereo indicator illuminates when in a tuned FM station or when AUX, Tape or Phono is selected.   
The Output bias was checked and reset. One channel had an offset of .07 Vdc which is amazing for a 50-year-old unit.  The other channel showed an offset of .5V which I was able to re-bias to .01 Vdc.  The FM tuner works and pulls in stations in stereo. The AM receiver also works as expected. Hi and FM filters work fine as well as the muting and loudness buttons.  Main and remote speaker buttons function as expected and do give a slight pop when turning on/off as these units were known for doing that.  I tend to leave the speaker switch selected which alleviates that issue.  The Tape monitor and mono switch functions as intended.  The Phono section is working as it should.  The headphone jack works as intended.

 All dials, RCA inputs and outputs have been cleaned, de-oxidized and tested.

Now for the Sound:

Sound is clear, warm and balanced on both speaker outputs.  It is truly laughable how good this Marantz sounds as compared to many modern pieces of equipment.  The audiophile streaming via Bluetooth brings this unit a notch above the rest. Amazing how good these units sound and can still hold their own.  Full of power, well balanced, warm and musical come to mind.  The FM section works and sounds as expected for its vintage which means that you have a little static and bleed-over on some stations.   The filters on the Marantz can help with some of these issues.  Vintage indeed.   The AM also preforms as expected for its time period and also has some background noise on some stations.  Now for the headphone section.  It’s ridiculous how good this headphone section sounds.  Other brands of equipment should just copy the exact circuit from Marantz and call it a day. Enough said.

Now for the FUN PART!

This Marantz 2238B comes with a built in streaming board mounted on a custom metal riser.  The riser board was made to be removable so that the electronic component could be removed or upgraded as needed and not leave a trace.  The board has its own dedicated power supply mounted to the back if the case and turns on and off with the Marantz automatically.  To stream music, you just set the input on the Marantz to AUX.  (The aux port functions normally if you have a device plugged into it).  The streaming board shares the AUX input.  You can stream your favorite music via Bluetooth right from your iPhone or Android. 

I have included an upgrade which let’s you stream High Resolution Audio via LDAC or AAC over Bluetooth. The LDAC add-on bumps the signal to noise ratio to 127 db from 91 db.  If you don’t know LDAC, it’s included in Android version 8 or greater.  Most iPhones also include AAC.  LDAC bumps Bluetooth to 990kbps and enables audiophile grade 127dB SNR DAC technology.  You now have the ability to have the Best of the Best audiophile grade streaming solution which will make the Marantz sing.  It sounds so good that you will start listening to your entire music collection all over again.  Once your phone is paired, it should automatically reconnect without intervention. 

Some Information about the Seller:

I am a long-time audiophile (almost 40 years).  I am also an electrical engineer.   This hobby was always my passion.  I love vintage equipment and I am always looking for the best of the best.  I learned over the years that replacing components within a system just because they are old may not do justice as it will probably change the original sound of the equipment.  Sometimes the sound is better in some ways and sometimes worse. Either way it won’t be as it was originally.  I tend to leave the working components alone and just change the bad components if any are found.  This is not a hard and fast rule as understanding the role that a component plays is also in that equation.    I also won’t compromise on safety.  If something needs to be addressed to make a unit safe or safer, then it will be addressed. Many vintage equipment on the market have questionable design decisions and need to be changed for safety reasons. Hope this helps.
