Hello and welcome to The House of chrome.
You are looking at a great general purpose omni-directional microphone made by Electro Voice during the 1950's & 60's that was intended to be used for dispatch purposes and general broadcasting. It comes with a vintage Atlas DS-2 model stand in which to display.
Pic # 2 is from an old E.V catalog showing the 641 and 638 model and it's characteristics. The 638 and 641 microphone utilized the exact same element but the 641 came with an elongated body via a center plastic extension with on / off switch which the 638 did not. The 638 was an all metal construction being very rugged and basically bullet proof The 641 is equally rugged but does have the plastic center piece of the mic.
It should be noted that this mic has been cleaned and tested but it no longer works as the original dynamic element no longer works. It should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only.
Again, this 641 has a Low impedance setting with a non-working signal. The 641 was omni-directional. These mics have a very mid century vibe as well that really stands out.
The 641 & 638's front grill has a classic design that resembled the air intake for many of the early American and Soviet fighter planes of that era. You'll notice that the microphone manufacturers were copying the styles of the American automobile, aircraft and space agencies for many years.
Made right here in the U.S.A 60 + years ago. Everything is tight on this 641. No loose parts and the on / off switch works perfectly.
The mic is cosmetically in very nice overall condition with just lite cosmetic wear on the polished chrome body. No heavy scratches or dings but there is fine pitting on the polished chrome body of the mic. You'll notice there are no dents or tarnish on the front screens either. The E.V badge has very lite wear. I'd rate it a very conservative 7 on a scale of 1 -10. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The threads for both the cable and stand are excellent with zero wear.
The mic comes with the period Atlas DS-2 model desk stand with the built in shock mount and it makes for a stable platform as well.
The DS-2 was sold from the mid 1960's and still sold today though the design changed just slightly over the years. This is the first gen model. It has the ebony stock paint on an aluminum base and the attractive red Atlas logo.
The DS-2 has the short 3 inch chrome riser that has a rubber shock mount so that the riser tilts as needed to reduce unwanted feedback when the mic was live. The riser and base show very lite wear. The base has it's 4 original rubber pads that work great.
Total height with mic and stand is appx 9 inches tall. This will be a fun display piece that will draw attention anywhere it sits. Will make a great paper weight as well or award for somebody in the music industry.
As always...
