Manuel Contreras DE 2A N-4 Classical Guitar, year 2000

Solid cedar top, solid Indian rosewood sides and back. Scale length is 650mm, nut is a little over 52mm wide. This guitar sounds amazing, with all the character of Contreras' best instruments: bold, clear, and amazing sustain in all registers. The string action is typical: 1st string (High E) is 3mm and 6th string (Low E) is 3.75mm.

Manuel Contreras joined the Ramirez workshop as a master luthier in 1959. It was Contreras who made the first José Ramirez guitar Andrés Segovia bought in 1960. After three years with Ramirez, Manuel opened his own guitar workshop and soon earned a reputation as one of the finest and most innovative luthiers in Spain. This particular guitar was constructed entirely by hand at the old Contreras shop at Calle Mayor 80, Madrid under the direction of Contreras II.

This guitar is in excellent shape, shiny with a few light marks on its surface and edges (see pictures). Tuning is easy with the super smooth Schaller GrandTune tuners. I'm currently using string ties on strings 1/2/3. Ties are not required; I just find they make restringing quicker.

I keep all of my guitars in a heat- and humidity- controlled environment. The body has no cracks. There is a hairline finish crack near the bridge. It's so thin, it is difficult to see or photograph (see very last picture). My local luthier inspected it and confirmed the crack does not extend into the wood.
