From the Schecter Custom Shop in Sun Valley, California, comes this rare Sunset Extreme—one of just six from a recent run. While impressive on looks alone, this is not simply wall art. Built with top-shelf materials, Schecter USA pickups, and impeccable workmanship, the Sunset Extreme is meant to be played.
The Schecter Sunset Extreme features a lightweight swamp ash body—just 6.8 pounds—and that wild burl top. With its multi-ply maple/walnut neck, it feels remarkably lively and highly resonant. The contoured body is exceptionally comfortable, and the slim-profile neck is expertly finished. Other than a quick tune, the factory setup is spot-on.
Equipped with a set of Schecter USA Brimstone pickups, one might assume this guitar is for metalheads only. But tone hounds should not dismiss ceramic-magnet pickups. While valued for their efficiency, ceramic magnets can also deliver excellent clarity and note separation, with high output that avoids the sonic downsides of simply overwinding a pickup. That is exactly what the Brimstones do: they are punchy and strong, but they also have a very even response and excellent clarity. Clean tones are nicely percussive, with a top end that is neither sharp nor metallic. And like other ceramic pickups we have tried, they do not get muddy when rolled down, and they split surprisingly well too—especially in the neck and neck-plus-middle combinations.
With just a single volume control, it is fair to assume this guitar is not aimed at soft rock. Plugged into our JAM Rattler pedal, the Brimstone pickups produced spectacular crunch best described as linear. The flat response translates into wonderfully detailed gain that stays even across the spectrum, with no hot spots or harsh peaks. Both the neck and bridge pickups remain tight and focused, even at very high gain levels. Aided by the sleek neck and expert fretwork, the Sunset Extreme is simply a blast to play.
At this price point, you expect an exceptional guitar, and on looks alone the Sunset Extreme does not disappoint. What surprised us was its versatility and tonal range; we expected a guitar heavily biased toward heavy tones, but found something far more flexible. The Schecter Sunset Extreme is a remarkably capable athlete, ready to tackle almost any musical challenge.
