Luthier: HOLLER, Jim
Year: 2020
Luthier Jim Holler's patented "Wedge" design for classical guitar, played by the late, great French guitarist/ composer Rolland Dyens, among others, creates a full, rich, beautiful sound. "The face of this instrument is of a very special group of hand split 40-year-old Western Red Cedar stock which was purchased 25 or so years ago in the luther's tone-wood selection process.
OFFERS CONSIDERED
The custom, hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind instrument features:
Specially selected Cedar top, Mahogany neck with fingerboard and bridge are made of ebony, Birdseye maple on tie block, the rosette from Birdseye maple, back and sides from Indian Roseewood with beautiful flowing grain and a sapwood center seam creating a visually appealing and striking contrast. An aesthetically exquisite headstock derived from it's unique overall shape, symmetry, and use of woods. Guitar binding is of rosewood, 650mm scale length, 52mm nut width. Porthole precisely featured on side of upper bout. 1 small side dot on 7th fret. Custom Rubner tuning machines are the “Rik Jonna” Hauser-style with MOP buttons. The guitar comes with a new Road Runner hardshell case. Hand-crafted HOLLER custom guitars are rarely available since the luthier is mostly retired. This instrument rivals many classical guitars that are much higher in price.
NOTE:
Jim Holler was the luthier, as noted above, for brilliant composer and guitar virtuoso Rolland Dyens who played a the wedge designed guitar. This guitar has a traditional body with a bent top and a sound portal. The tone was similar to modern concert instruments by many reputed luthiers of our day and has good clarity, projection and a wide color palette.
The bass bouts of the wedge guitar narrow to a thinner depth than those of a standard classical guitar, providing better ergonomics for the right arm. The Wedge design integrates the patented bent top feature and the player response second sound hole and should enhance relaxation, reduce discomfort, and allow the player to focus better on his or her playing.
To maintain the ideal internal air volume, the treble bouts are wider than normal. In addition to improving shoulder and arm comfort, this design presents the strings and fretboard at a reduced angle, allowing the right hand to maintain a more neutral position.
The Wedge design also creates more string clearance while maintaining conventional string spacing. Fretboard visibility is improved, as is left-hand attack, thanks to a more neutral starting position. By reducing the physical stresses of lengthy playing sessions, the Wedge should enhance relaxation, reduce discomfort, and allow the player to focus better on his or her playing. The guitar has a warm, rich, sound with immediate response. The beautiful cedar face produces a powerful mid-range with a "fatter", complex tone.
Please note: Due to change in humidity, and not uncommon with high-end acoustic and nylon classical guitars, there is a very thin, hairline crack in the face from lower bout to bridge. It has been professionally glued and cleated. Otherwise, the instrument is in superb condition.
