"Wild" Mick Brown's Dokken, Tama Artstar II 4-Piece Set. 26", 18", 16", 14" 1980's - Custom Red Sparkle Lacquer.

"Wild" Mick Brown, played this set in live and recorded performances with Dokken circa 1988-1989. Mick Brown played with Dokken from 1981-2008. He played on all of their major recordings and live performances. His super solid playing and visual appeal were a key part of the band's success. His wild presence, both onstage and off helped earn him the title "Wild" Mick Brown.

This drum set is a unique, one of a kind Tama ArtStar II set built specifically for Mick, with several custom features.

-The red sparkle lacquer finish was a custom color. This was the very first sparkle lacquer finish that Tama ever produced and the only set they ever made in this finish.

-The drum interiors all have "Vibra-Fibe" finishes. Vibra-Fibing was a fiberglass resin finish applied to the interiors of drums to make them louder and to enhance their sensitivity. It was popular in the 70s and 80s and used by drummers including Neil Peart and Kenny Aronoff.

-All drums are fitted with two internal piezo triggers with XLR jacks mounted on the shells. The bass drum has an additional XLR jack for an internal microphone. All of the internal wiring remains intact.

-All drums have 9 ply maple shells. The toms all have Tama Artstar II badges. The bass drum has a Tama Crestar badge. All four drums are clearly identical and from the same set. I have no idea why. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear from you.

The set really looks great. There are some fairly minor scratches and scuffs in the red sparkle finish that you'd expect to see on a drum set that has toured the world. Some of them have been touched up with red paint. There's nothing that you'd notice from 10 feet away.

Like I mentioned earlier, Mick Brown definitely earned his title of "Wild" Mick Brown. For instance, during their finale at the final performance of the 1988 The Monsters of Rock tour, Mick knocked this set over. Both he and his 18" floor tom ended up falling off the riser (see pic). I'm not sure how Mick faired, but his floor tom took a hit. The top hoop was slightly bent and the shell cracked at the edge causing the Vibra-Fibe coating to separate from the shell near the edge. The crack is not visible from the outside and did not crack the exterior finish. The crack has been glued but the damage is still visible inside the drum. We replaced the bent hoop. The drum sounds fantastic. I can't hear anything that would indicate this drum has been damaged.

There is some minor pitting in the chrome hardware but everything cleaned up nice and shiny.

One of the bass drum spurs has a slight bend but still works perfectly. One of the original red sparkle bass drum hoops was replaced with a natural maple finished hoop. The other had a lot of nicks and scratches in the original paint so both hoops were covered in red tape as you see in the photos.

All these imperfections are "fingerprints" from the set's Dokken history. The set still looks and sounds fantastic and screams rock 'n' roll. They're loud, controlled, punchy, and have a tight low-end with focused attack.

We precisely replicated the original Dokken front logo bass drum head. Mick Brown signed the logo head plus an additional 14" snare drum head. Both are included. COA signed by Mick Brown. Acquired directly from Mick's brother and current Tesla drummer, Steve Brown.
