Realistic by Shure Cardioid Dynamic Mic 33-1071 Tested, No Tariff!

Once upon a time, Shure decided to clone the competition's EV RE16 mic. It was manufactured in Japan by Shure and sold by Radio Shack. It isn't an exact, perfect copy, but it's close for a great price.

Here's a description of the EV model:

"The Electro-Voice Model RE16 is a dynamic supercardioid mic­rophone designed for the most exacting professional use. It is like the RE15, except that it uses a unique blast filter. The blast filter, an integral part of the RE16, permits hand-held and outdoor use without P-popping or excessive wind noise.

Utilizing the Variable-D design, the RE16 features a directional character­istic independent of frequency. The result is a microphone that generates little off-axis coloration while providing the greatest rejection of unwanted sounds. A super-cardioid, the RE16 provides its greatest rejection at 150 degrees off axis. Typical cardioids provide greatest rejection in the horizontal plane when the microphone is tilted in its most natural position, -30 degrees from horizontal as on a boom or floor stand."

Engineers use the RE16 for electric guitars (nice alternative to SM57, less peaky. It usually gets a few raised eyebrows from the players, until they tell them it's the same mic they used on Keith Richards' guitar for "Brown Sugar", then everyone's cool with it, and toms (watch the video) and sometimes even vocals (totally neutral unhyped sound w/ much less proximity effect than most vocal mics. Also ELVIS used one! See the last pic.

This one has the box (see the pix.) I'm also throwing in a new foam windscreen.

NB: The description on the box is not accurate! This is a HIGH IMPEDENCE mic. I checked it with my Klein multimeter and it is 520K Ohms, not 400 Ohms.

Got this from the Shure company site: "Shure microphones made for Radio Shack are manufactured to specifications agreed upon by both Shure and Radio Shack. There are no equivalent regular Shure microphones."

An original EV RE16 will cost between $350 to $600.
