Piper Percussion 6x14 Stave Snare

Purchased this absolute stunner of a snare direct from the builder. Gorgeous tone woods are perfectly matched to provide a rich full tone that sits so well in vintage and modern music styles.

Here’s the write up from the builder: “This is a Piper Percussion 6 X 14 mixed species segmented shell. The edges are vertical grain black walnut, the center is vertical grain ambrosia maple with two strips of  horizontal, quarter sawn white oak for increased lateral stability. Hardware is double flange hoops held on with 10 double sided tube lugs and claws. Pearl strainer and butt plate hold on a Pure Sound, 20 strand snare. 
The bearing edge is a double 45 with the edge lightly rounded to knock down the point, then sanded and sealed. The snare bed is hand cut 3/16th deep and smoothed out to 8 inches wide. The shell is sealed and finished with shellac to let the beauty of the grain shine! All the wood is locally sourced, milled, and aged for a minimum of 2 years on site. 
I like the attack and stick response of 20+ plywood shells, but wish they maintained more characteristics of a wooden drum. Super thick ply snare drums are sonically very close to metal shells. For my taste, I wanted a wood snare drum that was sonically between wood and metal. This shell design is what I call a Torus (copyright) shell.  I leave more mass at the bearing edges for strong attack and stick response and remove material from the inside of the shell in a torus pattern to open up the tone, retain wood characteristics and reduce weight.  Piper Percussion“
