Masaki Sakurai is considered to be one of the best luthier in Japan. He is a nephew of Masaru Kohno who is the most respected luthier in Japan, so Sakurai is the official successor to Kohno.

Sakurai won the prestigious first prize at the Fourth International Paris Guitar Making Competition in 1988. This guitar was made in the same year he received the award. I have played several Masaki Sakurai guitars and this one sounds the best.

In particular, I have also sold a Sakurai SPECIAL that did not sound as good. This top spruce has amazing bear claw patterns. Such a high grade of spruce is difficult to obtain and is rarely used, even on Sakurai guitars. But luckily, Sakurai was able to use great material for this guitar. I have always considered Sakurai guitars to be on the same level as Kohno guitars, but when it comes to this guitar, I would say Sakurai is superior.
