Original late 40s era Duplex Speaker With original kit and original crossover Period I discovered this Old church Off in the corner Period the box hadn't been used for a while And Was doing some work for them and made an offer on the box Almost Sure that there would be And Altec in there And I wasn't let down!
(In addition to the work listed below and the video, I added genuine walnut veneer to the cab that i feel may have been an actual later version of the Altec cab originally used with the Duplex speakers. The first two pics are the current state of the speaker and cab, though the rear cover was off in the pics, as the finish was still drying.
Now the ad, as cont.:)
The only thing that was a little bit of a drag was that the surround on the top outer edge of the speaker had degraded slightly over the years and was basically in pieces in the cabinet and there was about a half inch to a quarter inch of daylight between the outer rim and where the paper begin.
But as I tested, I noticed that the coil was very strong and the rest of the cone and the speaker was very robust and able to play just fine no rubs no rattles. So at that point I looked through my vintage cone collection and found the closest I could find in all these hundreds of cones that I have to this particular model and then I carefully cut a ring out and glued it to the part that was perforated.
I really wanted to save as much of the cone as I could so there it is, the repair is right out in the open and you can see how it's been done. The ring was laid over the original cone but just barely only covering about an eighth of an inch of the old cone and a high quality contact cement was applied to both surfaces and then carefully adhered to prevent any wrinkles or incongruency in the repair. As you look through the pictures there are many pictures of the repair and also many pictures of the rear as the repair looks from behind through the frame of the speaker. It's a pretty cool repair even if I do say so..
And of course there is a video to show you. I used the bass fiddle to show the depth of these. The speaker is in wonderful shape now, there was also a small piece of the back cover missing where the terminals got bumped at some point and so I replaced the terminals and added some filler to replace any missing parts of the cap and then reinforced it with epoxy and painted it with some paint to help it blend in. This part is usually hidden from view anyway but it is photographed plenty throughout this cycle of photos. Also as a bonus there is a cabinet that it came in which may be an original Altec, and what definitely is the original Altec crossover. The crossover is in near perfect condition and has not been restored. For the video I simply took a five uf capacitor and attached it onto a leg of the Tweeter and this seemed to do just the right crossover for that tweeter. That's what you're hearing in the video as the original crossover is hooked up but it's really not doing much as far as I can tell.. but it sure looks cool! Thanks for looking and best offers considered!
