Thank You! for choosing the Archangel V3 Preamp, the latest evolution of the Archangel V2 — originally developed as a drop-in, plug-and-play upgrade for the widely used FR-10 and FR-12 FRFR amplifiers produced by a major musical instrument manufacturer (with whom we are not affiliated).

The V3 was designed to preserve the backline mojo and distinct frequency curve of the stock preamp, while eliminating many of its shortcomings — especially the hiss and gain noise issues. Along the way, we added premium features, higher-quality components, and modern protections — all without compromising the plug-and-play simplicity users expect.

  Redesigned EQ section eliminates the hiss associated with 12 separate EQ amp channels — now reduced to just 3 precision-tuned channels.
• Optimized OpAmp Design
  Total opamp channel count reduced from 16 to 8, significantly lowering noise while improving signal path efficiency.
• Phantom Power Protection
  Integrated protection circuitry shields the preamp from potential damage when phantom power is applied via XLR connections.
• Clip Indicator Light
  A new clip LED provides clear visual feedback and mounts directly in the stock ground lift switch location.

Circuit & Performance Enhancements

• Increased Headroom Before Clipping
• • Input stages use the Burr Brown OPA2134, with three additional TI OPA-series premium op amps offering rail-to-rail voltage swing, dramatically increasing headroom.
  • The original single gain stage has been replaced with two isolated gain stages, cutting pre-EQ gain noise in half and keeping the signal well below rail clipping.
• New Cut Control Circuit
• • Redesigned without the need for an EQ amp or resonant filter — resulting in even lower noise.
  • Cut knob now ranges from 7:00 to 1:00 (standard behavior), with 1:00 to 5:00 providing extended horn attenuation, including complete shutoff at 5:00.
• Clean Gain Optimization
• • V2 Input Circuit gain increased from 14x to 14.4x, with negligible added noise.
• Extended High-Frequency Response (Revision B – April 2025)
• • Increased high-frequency cutoff point in the op amp bandwidth limiter. This improves clarity and "air" without adding gain, effectively replacing the previous revision's Bright Mod jumper.

Usability & Installation Improvements

• Rugged Volume Pot Upgrade
• • The V3 now uses a custom 41-click detented Volume Pot, replacing the clear-shaft version in the V2.
  • All 5 control pots now match in feel and style, accept stock knobs, and hold settings firmly ..yet feel just like an encoder.
• Optional Clip Light with Relocated Mounting
• • A rear-mounted clip LED is included and fits directly into the stock ground lift switch location.
  • Simple installation: remove the plunger, push in the LED holder, plug into the LED jack.
  • Bonus: This permanently lifts the XLR ground, preventing phantom power from damaging connected input devices.
• Phantom Power Protection
• • Unlike stock units, the V3 includes internal protection circuitry against phantom power from XLR sources.
• Improved Primary Wiring Harness (Revision B)
• • Replaces soldered wire headers with a 7-pin detachable harness featuring Heavy 20 AWG conductors for easier, more robust installation and long-term reliability.
