I am offering a Gibson Flying V Antique Natural from 2023, a made in Nashville, Tennessee (USA) Flying V model with an extremely light mahogany body (2.9kg total weight!) in a characteristic V-shape, set mahogany neck with a slim taper neck profile and 43mm Graph Tech nut, elegant rosewood fingerboard with classic acrylic dot inlays, two warm-sounding top-quality Gibson BurstBucker 2 & 3 humbucker pickups, Gibson Aluminum Nashville Tune-o-Matic bridge with aluminum stop bar and Grover Rotomatics tuners in a radiant antique natural high-gloss nitro finish in mint condition, including a brown Gibson luxury hardshell case and professional setup with 10-gauge Ernie Ball strings.
Although the Gibson Flying V was a huge flop when it was introduced in 1958, some guitarists did take notice of this unusual guitar. First and foremost, Albert King, who almost exclusively took to the stage with his '59 Flying V. When Gibson made a second attempt to popularize the flying V from 1966, the response was somewhat greater. Nevertheless, only small numbers were produced in the following years, and it was only from 1975 that production and sales picked up significantly, in line with the era of glam and classic rock.
While the first generation of Flying Vs was still made of korina, the following versions used mahogany for the body and neck.
This modern interpretation dates from 2023 and confirms all the positive preconceptions associated with this design: clean workmanship, the best woods and a fat sound. And yes, even if the “Fren Fry Fork” is not easy to play while sitting, it is convincing when worn with a belt, weighing only 2.9kg and with an already outstanding acoustic resonance.
Two Gibson BurstBucker humbuckers are at work on the amp, which, with their warm, powerful sound spectrum, are extremely versatile and cover everything from hot rock rhythm harmonies à la Lenny Kravitz, to loaded, wild Hendrix solo passages, to singing King Blues sounds.
A sound example of the model can be found at the top of the photo gallery.
Otherwise, the playability is extremely smooth due to the slim taper neck profile, the 43mm Graph Tech saddle and the low string action.
Visually, the guitar impresses with the beautiful grain of the tonewoods, which is shown off to its best advantage under the Antique Natural Nitro finish. Shining chrome hardware, shimmering acrylic dot inlays in the dark rosewood fingerboard and classic Grover Rotomatics tuners complete the overall picture.
