Crafted in Brooklyn, New York, this 1955 Gretsch Duo Jet (serial number #18058) is a stunning example of mid-century design and craftsmanship. It features a sleek black Nitron top paired with natural-finish mahogany back and sides, showcasing its vintage appeal and rock-solid build quality. The guitar’s chambered mahogany body, topped with a laminated surface, blends the resonance of hollow bodies with the punch and sustain of solid electrics.

The mahogany neck is fitted with a rosewood fingerboard, adorned with pearloid block inlays and bound edges for a refined touch. At its heart are twin DeArmond Dynasonic pickups, known for their articulate, punchy tone that helped define early rock ‘n’ roll. These pickups, predecessors to the later Filter ’Tron humbuckers, deliver a vibrant and dynamic sound.

Standout Features:

  • Bridge and Tailpiece: Equipped with the original Melita bridge and the iconic “G” logo trapeze tailpiece for a classic look and precise performance.
  • Pickguard and Knobs: A clear Lucite pickguard with a silver back-painted finish and chrome “arrow” knobs complete the guitar’s vintage aesthetic.
  • Finish and Hardware: Chrome-plated hardware adds to the sleek, automotive-inspired style.

This model exemplifies the innovation of the Jet series, introduced in 1953 as Gretsch’s response to Gibson’s Les Paul. Its unique chambered design strikes the perfect balance between the airy resonance of hollow bodies and the focused attack of solid guitars, making it a standout choice for players like Cliff Gallup of Gene Vincent’s band. The Duo Jet’s timeless design continues to hold its place as one of Gretsch’s most enduring and beloved models.

Condition:

This Duo Jet is in exceptional condition for its age. The original finish and hardware remain intact, with only light scratches, minor dings, and some belt buckle wear on the back. Notably, there is no evidence of a neck reset or binding deterioration—common issues on vintage Gretsch guitars. The frets have been professionally refretted with 104 47 frets by the best technician in the Bay Area, a $1,000 job that ensures flawless playability and extended durability.

Additionally, the guitar has been fitted with two extra bridges, one brass and one steel, offering tonal versatility alongside the original Melita bridge. While some fingerboard inlays have slightly shrunk over time, this does not affect the instrument’s performance or playability. The neck angle remains excellent, and the guitar plays effortlessly.

Extras:

The guitar comes with its original two-tone grey Tolex hardshell case, featuring the Gretsch banner under the lid. Also included is a vintage Gretsch-branded strap, a collectible item in its own right.

With its remarkable condition, professional refinements, and timeless design, this Duo Jet is not just a guitar—it’s a highly playable piece of history and a standout addition to any collection.
