The 500/1, which had been produced by Hofner for only European consumption since 1956, was finally introduced into the UK by Selmer in 1963 as the Violin Bass - Used, then and now, by a gentleman called Sir Paul McCartney.

This 1964 Hofner 500/1 Bass is all original, although the bridge pickup has been rewound. Pot codes are for 1963 which is common for a ’64 Hofner bass. The bass is in super condition considering its 60 years of age – although, as you would expect, it does have some very small marks and dings on the body (see last 6 pictures), and the edge has broken of the treble side of the string guide above the zero fret. The back of the neck has a slightly darker finish than the normal Hofner factory finish - we assume this has been over finished at some point in the past - looking at the whole of the bass under black light this finish was done very early in the bass's life.

The bass comes complete with a modern Hofner Deluxe Tweed finished case which is also in excellent condition.
