Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting...
A beautiful 1967 Teisco May Queen, made in Japan, all hollow body Electric Guitar. This guitar is all original but the logo and case... This cool guitar plays and sounds great! These guitars were only made two years. 1967 when Teisco was sold to Kawai and discontinued in 1968...they were so iconic and RARE they even reissued them in 1999. No dates but its one of the early years. We are calling it a 1967.
This is not the same May Queen we sold earlier this year. We finally found another!
Be sure to check out the video demo for another one of these historic guitars! Not this guitar but one very similar...
Besides setting it up great with low playing action, this guitar looks beautiful. All original parts.but the logo. The headstock looked a little bare so we added this cool repro logo from Banana Guitars. The Iconic Teisco May Queen embossed Pickguard is in great shape. The single F Hole Hollow body is in great shape with no cracks. ... only minor dings beyond that on this cool guitar. Check those pics!
The Teisco Pickups sounds great and this little guitar sounds much bigger than it looks. It weighs only 5 1/2 pounds but it sounds Heavyweight!! I have it strung up with new 10's for easy play and bending. The Three way switch is working as they should. The two knobs activate volume and tone. The guitar has a 24 1/2 inch scale neck measured from the zero fret and the nut measures a narrow 1 9/16 inches. Nice C profile makes this guitar play great!
Check out the cool original tuners on this beauty...see pic 10. The original frets have had plenty of play on them. They would last my lifetime!
The pickups sound great. I am always amazed at the tone of these Made in Japan Pickups. Very toneful and very loud!
Check out this cool info we found on the internet regarding these cool Teisco Guitars..
According to contemporary records, the ’60s guitar boom actually peaked in 1966. By ’68, the guitar industry was in trouble, both here (Valco/Kay went bust) and in Japan. Whether the whimsical guitars that appeared in ’68 were a desperate response to the drop in demand or a cavalier instance of Japanese guitarmakers flexing their muscles is unknown, but all of a sudden, exotic instruments had arrived. Guyatone, Yamaha, Teisco and Kawai all introduced guitars ranging from highly distorted monsters such as the Sharp 5, the SG-3C “earlobe” and the exaggerated Vegas, to the more conservative (yet original) “artist palette” shape of this May Queen. These guitars rank among the most aesthetically interesting creations of the ’60s… maybe of any time.
The Teisco May Queen was a hollowbody guitar with a single catseye soundhole and a bolt-on neck with the “check-mark” headstock typical of the time. Like most ’60s Japanese pickups, these large single-coil units are somewhat microphonic, but otherwise have a nice beefy output. Most May Queens were produced in black, but occasionally unusual finishes such as red one show up. Most carried metal Teisco del Rey logo plates, though, despite appearances, it’s not certain if this example was ever branded.
How many of these exotic guitars were made is unknown, but we do know production was down dramatically by ’68 and models such as the May Queen seem to be pretty rare. In any case, these guitars represent a brief window of time that yielded some of the most fascinating and desirable guitars in a unique Japanese style.
I sell a lot of these cool Made in Japan Guitars... Most are buying them as a reminder of the one they used to have, but these are also made to be played. I enjoy them a lot.
Check out the cool non original Hard Shell case with this one...Its in great shape..All latches, hinges and original handle are present and working properly. Try to find an original case for these...impossible!! Great to have this great form fitting case with this guitar!
