The instrument is a type of harp or zither. Specifically, similar to a converted and open-tuned autoharp, which can most closely be compared to an Indian instrument called a surmandal or swarmandal, which was popularized by Laraaji, who originally removed the chord bars from autoharps, thus converting them into amplified zithers.
