Likely the best condition Explorer out of the 1980s you will ever come across. 100% Original in the rare factory option color Luna Silver with Bill Lawrence pickups and push/push split coil volume knob.
What It Is:
In 1985, Mathias Jabs of the Scorpions wanted a custom Explorer that was 90% of the Original 84 Explorer for a more agile build. Henry J shortly took the helm of Gibson and his first series was the 90s series in 1988 featuring a Flying V Explorer and SG trio to compete with the shredder guitars of the 1980s like Kramer and Jackson that were outpacing Gibson. These guitars were a striking departure from all Gibsons given their unique feature sets. ALL had a 24-fret Ebony board in 25.5” scale with split diamond MOP inlays. They also featured a string-through and a tremolo model, each available in 3 colors with a “unique finish option (Nuclear Yellow- V; Luna Silver - Explorer; Deep Teal - SG). The 90 was a single humbucker guitar with bound board made exclusively in 1988. The 90 Double guitars featured an unbound board with a single coil neck pickup and split coil humbucker, made 1990-1. I have owned a couple of V90s and a pair of these Explorers (the only reason why I am selling this one). The Vs have a 58-style body and are quite heavy with the widest flattest neck profile I ever experienced. Thus, I sold them off years ago. The Explorer neck is one of the greatest profiles I have had on a Gibson, being a soft D that is not overly thin, nor thick at all… just comfortable and fast. The 25.5” scale neck has NEVER been made other than the 90/Double series.
Features:
- Special Factory Finish Option (Luna Silver)
- Original Bill Lawrence Pickups
- 25.5” scale neck with fast comfortable profile
- 24 fret Ebony board with real mop split diamond inlays
- Z model string through (preferable to the Steinberger and non-recessed FR trems)
- Original TKL OHSC in VG-EXC Condition with Gibson COA
As pictured the original finish is as clean as possible with minimal play wear. Corners are not dinged. Smail circular scratch on top (should buff) as well as a tiny pin/dot scratch- both are difficult to photograph. Has traditional finish settling at the lines (no finish checking, no structural cracks, breaks, refinishes, replacements or touchups of any kind). This is the most conservative “Excellent Condition” rating and would otherwise be considered ”mint.”
