Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at an early Astatic DN-500 model dynamic microphone from the 1940's with it's riveted aluminum Astatic badge. It comes complete with it's original F-11 adapter shown as well as the period Astatic E-5 model desk stand. This was a very good quality "general purpose" Dynamic microphone and was an affordable alternative to some of the more sophisticated dynamic cardioid mics of that era.
That being said it should be noted that this mic has been tested. It barely works as the dynamic element is compromised but you can see in the pics provided that this mic is in very nice physical condition and would be an excellent repair, prop or display piece. A replacement dynamic element would set this mic straight again.
Pic # 2 is from an old catalog I have showing the mics basic price and characteristics.
Pic # 3 is of Omar Bradley using this very model at a conference. He was the 5 star American General responsible for the Allied invasion of Europe during W.W II and arguably one of the most qualified American generals in American history. This DN-HZ model had that industrial look that was very popular in the 1940's to 1950's before the design lost appeal and was eventually phased out. Far more practical in design and less flashy. It was a rugged design but as you can imagine after 80 + years the mic has seen a tone of use and abuse. The 2nd generation DN-HZ had a more elegant look to it. This 1st gen model is much more masculine in design.
This unit has been thoroughly tested and cleaned. As you can see the DN-HZ has very lite physical wear. Just a few small paint chips but the chrome accents look great. The black screen is free of any holes or rips. The joint mechanism works nicely and allows for a smooth sliding adjustment. The Astatic badge looks excellent and completely legible. No dents or fractures anywhere on this mic.
The Astatic F-11 adapter is in great shape as well and is needed to operate the mic. It comes with the vintage male Switchcraft 1/4 inch end connector. It's wired properly as well in case you ever get the mic repaired. The cable is a short 10 inch in length. The cable is soft, pliable and free of any cracks.
The Astatic F-11 adapter with cable will allow you to screw this mic onto any American microphone stand though a period stand is included.
The stand is a 1940's era matching Astatic brand called the E-5. It too has the riveted badge on the bezel of the base.
The stand is a stable but lite weight aluminum design with what was a very modern design. It makes for an excellent platform for this Astatic DN-500. It provides a bit of height as well. As you can see the painted cast base looks very good with just smaller paint chips here and there while the chrome riser looks excellent.
The base has all 3 original felt pads though a bit worn. Total height and width of this combo is appx 11 1/2 inches tall X 5 1/2 inches wide.
This will look very nice anywhere it's displayed and will grab plenty of attention in the home, studio or office. A real conversation piece.
