Remarkably well preserved, this Salvadore de Durro was produced prior to WWII, as it is labeled “made in Germany” despite a very stylized Italian name. Styled after the Stradivarius model, it is a perfect 3/4 or 7/8violin at 12 3/4”. The knife work throughout is really beautifully done; as is the tannish-amber varnish found in its‘ original state throughout. At first looking at the violin I thought of this violin as a pre war II Czechoslovakia John Juzek. Yes, it is that handsome and well executed an instrument! At retail, an asking price of 2,500 U.S. for a full size Juzek-like violin in this state of preservation Is likely. There is no doubt that B and J ,well known exporters of quality violins to New York at this time, exported both Czech and German violins; many of these violins labeled as JuzeK .Based on the quality of the materials, caliber wood work and Strad model complimented with light varnish shadings . Labeled with the B and J export label as well, this is strong circumstantial evidence that this European export could have easily said John Juzek as well as its’ stated Salvatore de Durro as its name sake !
