Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking a gorgeous American made 1980's era Shure Brothers 517SA model dynamic cardioid microphone with the High impedance setting. This particular mic was introduced in the early 1980's I believe and sold for around 5 years. It's a rugged, all metal body with plastic front grill that had very good sound characteristics and was used general broadcasting, dispatch and other basic purposes. An affordable, quality mic that has held up very well with age. Not a high end studio mic by any means but great for basic use on a daily basis.
I hate talking this mic down because the sound quality is quite nice. This was basically the last generation of the 515 series that was sold in the 1970's. The 517SA was virtually identical except that the 517SA came in the attractive olive drab paint scheme giving it a bit more aggression. I actually prefer the look of this over the 515SA in the satin chrome finish.
This mic is kind of hard to come by as so few examples were sold and it's an American made mic so the quality control is top notch. Not as good as the Shure 545SD of the time but pretty dang close. And they just rarely ever come this nice. It comes with the original mic clip and a nice cable in which to operate.
Pic # 2 shows this very model from a Shure 1980's advertisement. The 517 series also came as the Shure 515 series which came in both High impedance & Low impedance but the 515 series all came in the satin chrome finish as where the 517 series had the olive drab paint scheme looking a bit more aggressive and reduce light glare. Again, this 517 is the SA model (high impedance) and if you need a Low Z version I have one of those for sale in another listing.
The stock painted body has extremely lite cosmetic wear as seen in the pictured provided and I don't think this mic was ever used but a few times. Just a couple tiny scuff marks on the handle. The chrome mesh screen is free of any dents and a new foam liner has been installed to help with the sound characteristics. The front plastic grill shows an absolute minimum of wear with zero cracks or fractures. The Shure logo that encircles the handle looks great as well. This mic has been tested and provides a strong, clear signal. 100%. Very mid range with almost no bass. Good uni-directional characteristics as well.
The on / off switch works perfectly.
Physical condition is an easy 9 out of 1 - 10.
The 517SA is appx 6 1/2 inches long with a bit of weight to it. The XLR pins on this mic were cleaned ensuring a perfect signal once the cable provided is attached.
The 22 foot cable is in very nice physical and excellent operating condition. Soft, pliable and comes with a quality Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector. Plenty of length for any stage or studio work.
Also included is an original Shure A-25 microphone clip that works perfectly giving a wide degree of tilt when the mic is mounted to it. It shows as little wear as the mic and works perfectly.
If you demand an excellent working High impedance mic with tons of character...look no further.
