Frank Cole, William’s brother, had a keen interest in mandolins and even took out a patent on mandolin construction. It’s possible that he designed or constructed the Cole mandolins.

William A. Cole, the elder brother of Frank, was a successful performer and teacher in Boston from before 1880 until 1909. He first became known as a maker when he partnered with A.C. Fairbanks to form “Fairbanks & Cole,” a business that ran from 1880 to 1890.

Although William was mainly a banjo builder and touring musician, it appears that Frank was heavily involved in supervising the actual building work.
