1964 Olympic White Fender Jazz Bass Pre CBS
This 1964 Olympic White Fender Jazz Bass was owned and played by Warren Watters, original founding member and bass player of the surf group, The Chantays. He was the original owner of the bass and used it while playing live and in the recording studios. I am the third owner of this fantastic bass.
The Chantays were famous for the hit, “Pipeline.”
This Pre CBS bass was built in 1964 in Fullerton, California, engraved on the four (4) bolt chrome neck plate is the serial number L20044. It has a countoured alder body with a tapered maple neck. It probably was originally sunburst and Mr. Watters had it painted another Fender color, Olympic White, which he detailed in a signed letter (included in deal). The 20 fret rosewood fretboard has 9 clay dots and a 34” scale length. Width is 1 1/2.” The headstock Fender logo is gold and black with Jazz Bass trademark electric bass, offset counter body in black. The butt of the neck is stamped with the date 7APR64A. All electrics appear to be original with all three pot codes the same, 304-6410. They are Stackpole pots from the 10th week of 1964. The two original single coil rectangular pickups have black covers with dual pole pieces for each string.
Other than a number of dings mostly on the edges of the bass the olympic white body is in nice condition (see pictures for details). There is light hand wear on the back of the neck and a small cigarette burn on the lower edge of the headstock.
This is a really clean 1964 Jazz bass with a straight neck, fully functioning truss rod, a nice fretboard and a beautiful slim C shaped early 60’s fast neck. The frets have plenty of life remaining. Tonally the bass is everything you want in a Jazz bass with versatile dual pickups. The original flat would strings have been left on. These strings have been on this bass since at least 1993.
Included in the deal are lots of memorabilia Warren Watters has sent. Original contract from Mr. Watters and the previous owners dated 9/22/1993. You can see memorabilia in the attached pictures.
Now you may ask why am I selling this historic bass. I have too many basses, 19 basses in total.
