The Gibson Custom Shop Made 2 Measure Murphy Lab ’59 Les Paul Standard, finished in the Murphy Painted Ultra Heavy Aged Kindred Burst, is a stunning example of vintage-inspired craftsmanship, tonal fidelity, and collectible artistry. This guitar is especially noteworthy as one of the last Gibson instruments personally painted by Tom Murphy, whose legendary Murphy Lab finishes set the benchmark for ultra-realistic aged Les Pauls. With Murphy no longer painting instruments, this guitar represents a rare piece of Gibson history. The Kindred Burst finish displays a beautifully rich gradient that transitions from deep amber at the edges to warm golden highlights toward the center, perfectly accentuating the natural flame of the handpicked maple top. The Ultra Heavy Aged treatment reproduces decades of natural wear, lacquer checking, and subtle patina, giving the instrument the character and visual depth of a true vintage ’59 Les Paul.
Constructed to the highest standards of the Custom Shop, the guitar features a lightweight solid mahogany body topped with a handpicked two-piece figured maple top, joined with hide-glue fit for superior resonance and sustain. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is thin and responsive, allowing the wood to vibrate freely while showcasing the exquisite flame and depth of the maple top. The Ultra Heavy Aged process provides authentic edge wear, surface checking, and fading, evoking decades of natural use without compromising the structural integrity of the guitar.
The neck is crafted from solid mahogany with a long neck tenon, enhancing both stability and sustain. Its Carmelita Fine Carve profile—Do Not Roll preserves the crisp fingerboard edges and delivers an authentic vintage feel. The solid rosewood fingerboard, hide-glue fitted, provides a smooth, responsive playing surface along the 24.75" (62.865 cm) scale length, delivering the classic warmth, clarity, and note articulation of a 1959 Les Paul.
Voice comes from unpotted Custombucker pickups in both the neck and bridge positions, reproducing the harmonically rich, touch-sensitive tone of late-’50s PAF humbuckers. Vintage-accurate electronics include two 500K CTS volume pots, two 500K CTS tone pots, a hand-wired harness with Bumblebee capacitors, and a Switchcraft toggle switch, offering authentic tone shaping and reliable performance.
The hardware is historically accurate, with a nickel-finished ABR-1 bridge and lightweight aluminum tailpiece, contributing to the guitar’s resonance and sustain. Strung with standard .010–.046 gauge strings, it is ready to play right out of the case.
This Murphy Lab ’59 Les Paul Standard is housed in a Brown/Pink Reissue case, reminiscent of the vintage Lifton cases of the era, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity, confirming its Made 2 Measure Custom Shop origin. With its captivating Kindred Burst, Ultra Heavy Aged finish, meticulous construction, and distinction as one of the last guitars personally painted by Tom Murphy, this instrument stands as a true heirloom-quality Les Paul—ideal for collectors and discerning players seeking unparalleled vintage tone and aesthetics.
