Aesthetically stunning and exceedingly lightweight, at only 6.2 lbs., we present this Rick Turner Model 1 Featherweight. We are extremely impressed with the level of craftsmanship and versatility that Rick Turner has achieved with this model. The tonewoods used are gorgeous and the compact body size with its lightweight design create a very inviting playing experience before you even plug the instrument into the amplifier. Speaking of which, strumming this Model 1 Featherweight, before plugging in, yields a surprisingly resonant and lively experience. Prepare to be astonished at the range of sonic possibilities of this instrument when you do plug it in! The control layout is unique but quickly understandable within a few minutes of reviewing what each knob does and tweaking each to experience the wide range of tones. At first blush, it seemed that the lack of a bridge pickup would limit the guitar’s ability to achieve biting tones to cut through the mix. However, after a few minutes of exploring the sonic range of each knob, it quickly became apparent that this guitar covers an incredible amount of tones. Then, blend in the acoustic tones via the piezo and discover the universe of sounds this instrument can achieve. Many guitarists believe that the presence of a single pickup, instead of multiple magnets, reduces the magnetic pull on the strings which allows the strings to vibrate more freely which increases resonance. This is typically to the detriment of versatility as you are limited to a single pickup. Whether you are a believer in that hypothesis or not, this is a single-pickup guitar with an incredible sonic range.

Sonically, the Featherweights have a bit more of an “acoustic” nature to them than most solid body guitars, though you’ll have no problem rocking out with the best of them. The Model 1 Featherweight shares the same hardware, pickups, and electronics as the Classic, the difference being in the wood and construction of the body.

The Deluxe Featherweight Model 1 is built with a .100″ thick top and back (other wood options are available as upgrades) bent over a very light weight and resonant Western Red Cedar body core. Tonally the tops and backs do make a noticeable difference with harder woods such as rosewood adding more sparkle to the high end and the medium woods like mahogany and maple providing a mellower tone. Piezos also make a great addition to any Featherweight. Pegheads with Rick’s signature 5 layer veneered backstrap overlay and neck joints with multi-layer purfling.
