Vintage 1960's! Semi-Hollow Body! Made In USA!
This is really cool. You are looking at a Standel 400-S Bass from the early 1960's. Not too many of these around. Standel was primarily an amp builder who out sourced his guitar and basses from 1961to 1967. I believe this is a 1961 because of the "61" in the serial number (See picture #9, #10). I don't know for sure but it is definitely 1960's vintage. Here is a brief history of Standel courtesy of the web:
But one of the more curious/convoluted tales of the ’60s guitar boom involves Standel and its efforts to market guitars carrying its brand. After the inspiration struck in the early ’60s, company founder Bob Crooks approached builders in his home area of Bakersfield, California. Mosrite built a small number of instruments bearing the name prior to Semie Moseley’s affiliation with the Ventures. Then, former Mosrite employee Joe Hall’s Hallmark company built Standel guitars and basses in the mid ’60s. The relationship between Standel and the Bakersfield-area builders was never particularly stable, a fact exemplified by the number of guitars in the vintage market that bear both the Hallmark logo and the Standel “snake S” emblem.
The sole bass in the four-page catalog was the model 400, a member of the Standard series. Available in a Sunburst (400S) or Cherry finish (400C), it had the same double-cutaway body dimensions (16″ wide, 13/4″ deep) as the 420 guitar. The semi-hollow body has all-maple construction on the outside (including the aforementioned arched back), and an internal block, a la the Gibson EB-2 it resembles. The neck is one-piece mahogany.
Designed by Semi Mosely of Mosrite, these are his original designs. The slim profile Mahogany neck combined with the double cut away design gives you that fluid motion when playing. A real high quality bass.
Our luthier did some repair work on this Standel. The neck has been re-set. The bass has been set up. It plays and sounds really well. This is a "Players" bass that is highly collectable.

If you are looking for an affordable USA Vintage guitar that you can really play not just put in a display case, this is the one. Very Rare. Good Condition. Very Authentic. A "Players" guitar that is still very collectable.
Cosmetics: Good Condition. There is lacquer checking all over this guitar. Very light finish cracks that are cosmetic only, NOT structural. Keep in mind that this is a 50+ year old vintage bass. There are some scratches, chips, dings and dents. The binding around the headstock has some cracks. The binding is still firmly attached but the cracks are visible. Dripping with "Mojo" Has all the street cred and than some. It is used. Not perfect. Look at the pictures closely. They will tell the story.
