Gibson 1980 V2 natural.
It is made from maple and walnut, with an ebony fret board, dot inlay and 2 V shaped pick-ups. It's about 8.5 lbs. The strap pins are on the back center of the body leading to good weight distribution while having plenty of mobility versus the tip of the wing.
You may read love and hate for the Bill Lawrence 'Boomerang' pickups... both the look and the sound. These are strong output pickups that can give you both smooth and creamy cleans, but with bite using heavy attack and dialing in gain or boost. Reverb sounds magical through them. Inside each, they are actually two pickups angled, one for the three lower strings, one for the high. This creates some interesting articulation. We have read reviewers claim they are muddy, but suspect that was the reviewers amp settings. We're fans, so we also think the Boomerang pickups with the carved curves in the V body and counter pointed head stock make it the most beautiful V ever produced. At the time they were top of the line Gibson instruments and expensive, which may have led to their very short few years of production. A shame in our humble opinion.
One design note, if you like the V shape for seated playing with the open part of the V resting on your thigh, then you'll need a right angle cord plug. The cord jack is on the inside edge of the V midway. With a straight plug you won't be able to rest it on your thigh while seated. Later Vs had the plug on the front near the controls.
The guitar is in excellent condition. Rating condition of vintage guitars is a bit of a dilemma. 40 years+ brings it's own peculiarities. If this were from the 2020s, we would rate it very good. We think the Excellent rating is consistent with the other V2s for sale currently on Reverb. The finish coating is shiny all over with no hazing. There are some nicks and bumps, but nothing breaking the finish, except for the top of the headstock, pictured. Note that their are two dark striations on the shoulders that are natural wood coloration seemingly bookmatched from the same piece of wood.
The case is in fair condition. We believe it's the original case.
We tend to use the 'barn find' approach to maintaining the guitars. We do not try to refresh vintage guitars to look like new. We leave that option up to you, and try to leave the guitars in original state, or as close as possible. So we did not glue down the case Tolex. We did not replace or fix the hinges which likely can be fixed. Interestingly, the red ribbon hinges limits are intact and very strongly attached.
Note that the frets are in great condition with little wear and seemingly little playing time. Flat jumbo frets were standard from the factory. Again, while we would prefer crowned frets, we did not touch them. They are stock.
The guitar was given a setup, cleaning, basic maintenance, and the electronics cleaned by Moe's Guitars in Hawthorne, NJ where we are now having all our maintenance done. It's a great shop and highly regarded in the area.
Shipping must cover the US. If you are around the NYC Metro area, we will be happy to return excess shipping fees. Note that shipping insurance on an instrument of this value is expensive and part of the shipping fee. We reuse boxes that are sturdy... save the planet and all that. We will drive up to 100 miles to meet and hand deliver for a guitar of this value, and bring a battery amp, or you bring yours. Local pickup is welcome.
Serial number has been obscured to prevent spoofing and protect our gear community.
We priced it to sell with list well under the current lowest listed price for these guitars.
