Ampex 400/401 Tube Tape Machine - Mono

Unique opportunity to purchase a complete Ampex 401 tape machine in Europe that has been professionally converted to 230V.

The tape machine's amplifier was professionally overhauled by a technician and contains the sought-after Triad and UTC HA-133 transformers, which are probably defining for the US sound. A Chicago Transformer is installed as the PSU transformer.

I used the machine for mono mastering with great results and really appreciated the coloring of the tubes and transformers, as well as creating very authentic 1950s slapback delay with it.

Unfortunately the erase oscillator is defective and so you can't record with it at the moment, you can only play back or use it as a tube preamp.

The oscillator is identical to those from the Ampex 350 series and should be easy to obtain as a spare part or you can replace it with one with the same values of a different design, as it does not shape the sound. (I have an Ampex 350 Amp that contains the oscillator and could be used as a donor. We can build this into the amp for you, for an additional fee).

Both leather carrying straps are unfortunately torn, but unfortunately the material is not made to last forever. Otherwise the transport box is still in good condition.

All in all, a very rare and beautiful machine that was already used by Les Paul and Norman Petty for the Buddy Holly recordings and therefore has a real cult factor.

Perfect for a mono hi-fi setup with vintage Altec speakers, in the studio as a tape effect/master machine or as an authentic slapback delay.
