This thing absolutely rules. This JVC is a super professional and beautiful sounding deck. It's so awesome as a home stereo unit, and it also rules in the studio for making tape prints of tracks and lining in live instruments from an external mixer.
If you're using it to record your own music you can line in a mixer of drum mics, acoustic guitar, synths (especially synths) and record live directly onto the machine. It sounds awesome, I seriously think it sounds just as good as any nice 4 track I've ever had, I'm super impressed! You can crunch out the signal with the onboard preamp and it sounds awesome, it's a great natural effect. There's so many creative ways to go back and forth between an interface when you're recording, I think the use of a tape player can really breathe new life into a basic recording setup. Whether your studio is a huge Neve equipped multitrack or a Focusrite with an SM57 there's a cool way to use this unit. The workflow changes and the overall recording experience changes, in my opinion definitely for the better!
If you're using it to listen to music on a home stereo it is also awesome. I think it's rad to listen to music from the era it came out on with the medium that was popular at the time. I always figured they were mixed and mastered with the dominant medium of the time in mind. You listen to The Cure, The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, Bauhaus, The Police, anything else from the age of the cassette and I swear it sounds way better on cassette than on vinyl. As you can see I have two different Depeche Mode albums loaded in this thing, and seriously this is how you have to listen to Depeche Mode. The Cure in my opinion kind of has to be listened to on a cassette. While you were waiting for your mom to pick you up in front of Sears at the mall you weren't listening to The Cure on a vinyl record. The Cure was about waiting for your mom while staring off as your batteries died and the sun set and Robert Smiths voice got slower and slower and then you got cold. The Vinyl record experience with The Cure? I'm sure it's great, but come on the cassette is what won the most hearts. The Beatles? Way better on Vinyl. The Cure? Way better on cassette. Kid Rock? AMAZING on CD duh.
It's in fantastic condition, you would swear it's brand new. Both decks work perfectly in all directions and functions, they play at perfectly the right speed and they both sound phenomenal. Usually on these I tend to like one side a little more than the other but on this one I like them both. Great unit!
