The Shop’s Take (TL;DR)
Here is a circa-1963 Gretsch Progressive Jazz 4x14 snare drum with a Round Badge, original Gretsch hardware, Silver Sealer interior, and vintage Anniversary Sparkle wrap.
This drum originally left Gretsch in Burgundy Sparkle and was later professionally rewrapped by Bentley’s Drum Shop using vintage New Old Stock Anniversary Sparkle material from the 1980s. The result is not an original-finish collector example, and we are not representing it as one. What it is, though, is a genuine early-1960s Gretsch Progressive Jazz with its original shell and hardware, restored in one of Gretsch’s most distinctive historic finishes.
For the player or collector who values the instrument itself more than untouched finish originality, this is a particularly appealing vintage Gretsch snare.
Full Description
The Gretsch Progressive Jazz is one of the company’s classic compact snare designs from the Round Badge era.
This example dates to approximately 1963 and features the familiar shallow 4x14 shell, eight-lug configuration, die-cast hoops, Round Badge, Silver Sealer interior, and Gretsch hardware associated with the period.
The drum originally wore Burgundy Sparkle.
At some point in its later life, it was professionally rewrapped by Bentley’s Drum Shop using vintage New Old Stock Anniversary Sparkle material dating from the 1980s.
Anniversary Sparkle has its own place in Gretsch history. The finish originated during Gretsch’s 75th-anniversary period in the late 1950s and became one of the company’s more visually distinctive covered finishes.
The rewrap was done professionally and presents extremely well. There is one small cosmetic scuff measuring approximately 5mm, which is visible in the photographs.
Importantly, the underlying Gretsch drum remains substantially original.
The original shell retains its Silver Sealer interior and factory label, while the Gretsch hardware, hoops, strainer components, and snare hardware remain with the drum.
The bearing edges are also in excellent condition.
This is best understood as a genuine vintage Gretsch Progressive Jazz that has received a high-quality period-material rewrap rather than as an untouched original-finish example.
That distinction matters, and we want the next owner to know exactly what they are buying.
Condition
Very Good to Excellent vintage condition.
The vintage Gretsch shell and hardware present exceptionally well overall.
The Anniversary Sparkle rewrap is clean and professionally executed, with one small approximately 5mm cosmetic scuff noted above.
The chrome hardware shows only light age-related wear and remains very clean overall.
The Silver Sealer interior, factory label, bearing edges, and Gretsch hardware all present well.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
