Modified Dolby Vocalstressor card CAT22 “Dolby Trick” and “Lennon Trick” stretch mod

These modified cards work in all 300 series Dolby noise reduction units (361, 362, 365, 360, etc) and are intended for the “Dolby Trick” effect (as demonstrated in my video that I’ve attached to this listing). This trick was used in tandem with a cheap shure Sm7 on Michael Jacksons voice for the thriller album which made it an overnight studio weapon of choice for artists like Queen, John Lennon, Boston, Prince and hundreds of others.

Since I’ve been selling these, they have really caught on with EDM producers who use them on their synthesizer stereo bus stems as well, (of all places!). They sound amazing on elec guitars, acoustic guitars (my personal fav), drum overheads, and pretty much anything you put through them that needs an out front shove in your mix. That’s because it’s using multi band compression and not anything else, such as EQ, spatial enhancer, sonic maximizer, or any of that other stuff it often gets mistaken for. The principal is that it is leaving the low end & the mid range untouched (bypassing these frequencies), while boosting and lifting the high.

This is achieved by compressing two separate bands of critical compression (without using EQ), to bring the source forward in your mix and add “air” to the vocals. This effect can often appear very subtle, depending on the signal chain being used. Even though these are now famous for their use on vocals, I encourage you to try it on pretty much every source In your mix and use your ears. Like all my other clients, you’ll be very surprised just how powerful this tool is on everything you pass through them.

* Note: I have recently improved the way I achieve this modification and my work is a bit cleaner than it was before. I now use shrink tubing on the left leg of the resistors that I left instead of removing the resistors completely. This allows you to put the cat 22 card back to stock if you ever would like to use it for encoding and decoding to reel to reel tape, increasing the value to my customers.
