This metal pod bell is called frikiywa (pron. FREE-chee-wah) by Ghana's Asante people, dodompo by the Ga, and krentsiwa by the Ewe. The walnut-size instrument is small enough to fit easily in a car's glove compartment, purse, or pocket. The instrument has a commanding voice that belies its size. And it is the frikiywa's compact size that makes it ideal for sitting in on jam sessions or for those occasions when you might want to join mobile processions such as Bahamian junkanoo parades or New Orleans second lines.
